At the end of last year and the beginning of this year i haven’t really had the chance to do much night photography or astroscapes. I’ve been concentrating more on Portrait Photography and Commercial Work.
I really want to remedy that before the end of the year. but until i get back out again i’m going to show you a few of my favourites.
I’ll throw out a few tips on creating the images as well.
This photo was in the middle of a startrail i was working on. Sometimes a single shot just looks amazing. This was all about timing really. Keep an eye on your forecasts and the shape of clouds rolling in, as they sometimes enhance a photo.
Just on the cusp of sunset and blue hour is a great time to take photos. Along with the car trails and highlights in the puddles there is a lot of interesting aspects.
The Winter Milkyway. Harder to shoot than the core with less nebula to see, but still a beautiful and slightly more subtle scene. Sometimes less is more.
Having an interesting foreground is sometimes as important as the sky.
Choosing a direction to shoot star trails is important. Sometime a more flowing direction can look better than the circular pole shots. Also the edit of the trail can help bring out a bit more detail.
But sometimes pointing north is the correct way to go. Composing your shots is key to a pleasing outcome. You know the directions the stars move, so think about locations with that in mind.
Capturing a Sunrise/Blue Hour with the stars is just as good as a sunset. You can take advantage of a good intervelometer here if you want a self portrait. Stay very still though.
I hope these little bits of information help you with your next shoot.
If you want to have a look at the kit i use have a quick look at https://www.amazon.co.uk/shop/garethnormanphotography
Finally, have fun and stay safe, and enjoy shooting.
