Wire Wool Spinning. Never really done it to a great extent, and always felt like a beginner with it.
I still do really. but Phil Vernon, is pretty damn proficient at this spinning game.
Last night was one of those lets just go out and do something sort of nights.
the stars were out and 3 of us made our way to watermead park. A great place for loads of different things, but at night it takes on a different feel completely.
A few words of warning before even attempting something like this. If possible, go out with someone experienced in doing this. Make sure you take the right safety precautions ie: safety glasses, cotton clothing, headgear. This blog is for entertainment purposes only. Don’t go copying what we did.
Setting up on a bridge we used torches to focus if needed and to lightpaint afterwards for a more balanced shot. Wide Angle is generally the way to go, so stuck with the 14mm Samyang, f2.8, AF.
First Spin, First Shot. Beauty. Lots of stars, clouds and fire. EXIF:13 Seconds, f5.6, ISO200
Went with a pretty relaxed edit on this one. Not much done to be honest.
Moved around for the next shot.
Lightpainted the Foreground to draw the eye a bit. This is 2 separate shots. One with the foreground painted and one for the spinning wool.
Tried lightpainting and also a different edit on this one. Also pretty impressed with Phil’s dexterity on the edge of the drop into the abyss.
The Edit was leaving the Daylight White Balance for the main bulk of the photo and using a gradient map too cool down the sky a bit. That Moonlight really helped bring things together as well.
EXIF: 18 Seconds, f5.6, ISO200
Another one at this location. Just changed the swing a bit.
Same sort of deal with the white balance. EXIF:20 Seconds, f5.6, ISO200
Went across to the Wier for a few shots.
Really turned out well.
This spot would be good for some more creative shots, but at this time the cold was biting a bit.
EXIF: 23 Seconds, f5.6, ISO200
I was using an intervelometer for most of these shots to keep the camera steady and also the settings were useful right from a few seconds, right up to 8 minutes, which was a usable shot, but a bit crazy. The Dynamic Range of the D750 is out of this world.
Just getting low and seeing what i would get. Experimentation and Trying different things is key. sometimes it doesn’t work, but now you know.
Last Location on the way back to the Cars.
Over the edge, great load of sparks off, in line with the bridge. EXIF:23 Seconds, f6.3, ISO200
Also last little bit about safety. Make sure no one else is around who doesn’t know what your doing. They may possibly ride their bike into the drink.
Luckily this fella was all good. Made a nice light trail though. EXIF:30 Seconds, f6.3, ISO200
Back home in the warm after this. Always nice to get home and check your work straight out the camera on a bigger screen.
I now have a store for Prints and anything else. Look at the top of the page and click on Shop. If you want to email me for a custom order, or something not in the shop drop me an email.
Finally, have fun and stay safe, and enjoy shooting.
Any suggestions for future blog posts, drop me an email. I will at some point be going into more detail on future posts.
