We’ll start with a few basics really. Where can you do them? Wherever you want really, it is nicer to have a good foreground to give the whole image a good rounded feel, but not necessary when just getting your head round it all.

Cloudscape Thornton

Exif: f2.8, 30 seconds, ISO100. Thornton Reservoir. The clouds were moving quite rapidly.

Just get to your location and figure out what would look good with a long exposure. a lot of things look good in the foreground with a fast cloud movement. Unfortunately it can be hit and miss on direction, but just give it a go.

Sometimes a shorter exposure can go a long way. These clouds were slower moving, but very threatening, and gives more of a painted look.

East Coast Wave Breakers

EXIF: f5.6, 13 Seconds, ISO100

There are a few different techniques. You can stack a number of shorter exposures or go for a long exposure. It doesn’t always have to be 30 seconds or below. If you use an Intervelometer in bulb mode you can go as long as you want.

Thornton Sunset

EXIF: f22, 4 Minutes 26 Seconds, ISO100. Lower fstop lets less light in, to give you a longer exposure. this was using a 10 stop filter as well.

the only real difference with nightscape/cloudscape shots, is, you do have to keep the exposure time down, to negate the movement of the stars. that’s where stacking can come in sometimes.

the main thing is to get out there and get the questions flowing. Try as many techniques as you can, and find something your happy and comfortable with doing. Go and Create some amazing art.

Single Shot Ruins Cloudburst

One of my favourites from last year. the clouds just moved perfectly to create a burst above these ruins.

Thornton Clouds and Stars

Very fast clouds over a derelict carpark.

Old John Long Expo

Very Slow moving clouds on this 30 second exposure.

Different conditions can give you different effects.

There is no hard and fast rules. Generally, the longer the exposure, the longer the cloud streaks. The faster the clouds, the shorter the exposure required to get long streaks.

Have fun with it. Long Exposure can sometimes be difficult to get right exposure wise, but persevere.

I now have a store for Prints and anything else. Look at the top of the page and click on Shop. If you want to email me for a custom order, or something not in the shop drop me an email.

Finally, have fun and stay safe, and enjoy shooting.
